When the REDBLACKS signed return specialist and receiver Chris Williams earlier this offseason the excitement was palpable. Though Williams has not played a CFL game in over two years, fans still remember his superhuman speed and swiftness.

Williams broke into the league with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in 2011 and promptly won the CFL’s Most Outstanding Rookie Award. He followed up that campaign with one of the greatest seasons in recent CFL history.

His 2012 regular season stats were like nothing seen in years. Williams made 83 receptions for 1298 yards, while scoring 11 touchdowns. He added to those totals with 1373 combined return yards and seven return touchdowns as well. He holds the CFL record for most return touchdowns in a season, beating out Henry “Gizmo” Williams’ five in 1991. Williams trailed only the “flyin’ Hawaiian” Chad Owens of the Toronto Argonauts for most all-purpose yards with 2681 that year.

Williams’ accomplishments throughout the 2012 season earned him the CFL’s Special Teams Player of the Week Award four times, and culminated with him being named the CFL’s Most Outstanding Special Teams Player.

His quarterback that season was none other than REDBLACKS starter, Henry Burris. The two connected offensively for one of the best seasons in both of their careers. Burris was also consulted before the Williams made the decision to sign with Ottawa.

REDBLACKS running back Chevon Walker was on the 2012 Tiger-Cats roster with Williams as well and played a large part in attracting him to Ottawa. “Chevy says it’s a great atmosphere and you can’t beat it,” said Williams. “Sold out and fans are loud, so I’m looking forward to it.”

The entire #RNation is looking forward to his play in front of those sold out crowds too. If it’s anything like his 2012 season, the REDBLACKS should be headed to success.
