TORONTO — There are still plenty of storylines to watch as the season enters Week 11. We look at the latest around the league in the latest edition of Checking Down.
CFL
- Defensive lineman Shawn Lemon is set to return to the CFL and is reportedly deciding between three offers – the Lions, REDBLACKS, and Bombers.
Ottawa REDBLACKS
- The REDBLACKS enter their bye week in high spirits after a big win against the Riders. “We’ve worked our butts off this year to keep ourselves in the chase,” said quarterback Henry Burris.
- Chevon Walker was cut by the team on Friday after the team opted to use Jeremiah Johnson at running back.
- Ottawa has lost defensive lineman Aston Whiteside for the season following a severe knee injury suffered against the Riders.
- Defensive line coach Leroy Blugh was honoured in a halftime ceremony following his induction to the Canadian Football Hall of Fame.
BC Lions
- The Lions ‘felt they weren’t getting enough out of the slotback position’ and cut AC Leonard.
- Defensive tackle Zach Minter may finally get his chance with the Lions after a number of roster spots were reshuffled.
Edmonton Eskimos
- Neil King was leaving the stadium after practice when he thwarted a would-be bike theif and earned an award from the city for his efforts.
- Now an offensive lineman with the Eskimos, D’Anthony Batiste was a police officer in New Orleans in 2005 when Hurricane Katrina struck the city. He recalls his experiences on the tenth anniversary of the storm.
- It hasn’t taken long for Derel Walker to emerge as a top threat with the Eskimos. Through three games, he’s already racked up 31 catches and sits 11th in the league with 472 receiving yards.
Calgary Stampeders
- The Stampeders defence has been getting the job done throughout the team’s four game winning streak. It’s been a team effort from players both young and old.
- Lemar Durant only has four catches this season but he is averaging 22 yards per reception. For a player who started the season on the practice roster, the rookie’s first year in the league has been a learning experience.
Saskatchewan Roughriders
- The team has parted ways with general manager Brendan Taman and head coach Corey Chamblin.
- Before Sunday’s loss to the REDBLACKS, Rob Vanstone of The Star Phoenix said his belief is that the Riders should stick with Brett Smith at pivot even when Kevin Glenn is healthy enough to return
- Saskatchewan has released Tino Sunseri.
- Many were wondering why Chamblin decided to bench Smith in favour of Sunseri against the REDBLACKS. Mike Abou-Mechrek of The Leader-Post thinks the quarterback switch didn’t make sense and that Smith needs a longer leash.
Winnipeg Blue Bombers
- The team announced Wednesday morning that they have signed running back Chevon Walker to the practice roster. He was released by the REDBLACKS late last week. Cameron Marshall has been the team’s starting back as Paris Cotton remains sidelined with a broken arm. The four-year veteran has 1,594 career rushing yards and eight touchdowns on 327 carries. He has also recorded 86 receptions for 816 yards and five receiving touchdowns.
- Winnipeg can’t use losing Drew Willy as an excuse when four other teams are also missing their starting pivots, says Doug Brown of the Winnipeg Free Press.
- Kirk Penton of The Winnipeg Sun looks into some of the possible reasons for the offensive struggles of the Bombers this season.
Hamilton Tiger-Cats
- The Ticats focus more on the pass in their offensive system but the loss to the Alouettes shows that the team needs to get better at the run.
- Expect defensive coordinator Orlondo Steinauer’s name to pop up in vacant head coaching position discussions. It remains to be seen if he is actually available to other teams.
- The injury bug has forced Eric Norwood, Mike Daly, Johnny Sears Jr. and Byron Archambault to the six-game injured list.
Toronto Argonauts
- At the halfway mark of the season, the Argos find themselves tied for first place in the East. It’s a result theyshould be pleased with considering they are relying on a number of rookies and using their backup quarterback.
Montreal Alouettes
- Jim Popp hasn’t confirmed a starting quarterback for Week 11. While Rakeem Cato is practicing following a hip pointer, Tanner Marsh remains ready for the opportunity should it arise. Cato missed practice on Tuesday for personal reasons but all indications are that Marsh will get the nod.
