As the REDBLACKS head west for their second game of a back-to-back with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, we look back at former Bomber Jovon Johnson and his amazing 2009 season.
Though he was presented with the CFL’s Most Outstanding Defensive Player Award in 2011, it was two years earlier that Johnson really started electrifying football fans across Canada.
That season was his second in Winnipeg and he was tasked with the team’s kick and punt returns, as well as his defensive role as a cornerback.
He recorded a career high in tackles with 76 and added six interceptions as well. Though his defensive numbers were impressive, it was his work on special teams that really made the nation take notice.
Jovon’s combined return stats totaled 1,652 yards. His dynamic speed and agility helped him become one of the league’s top double-threat options, as many return specialists in the CFL were confined to that specific role.
Check out this video of his longest return from 2009.
