Top spot up for grabs
After reeling off back-to-back wins against Hamilton and BC, the REDBLACKS are right back in the hunt for first place in the CFL’s East Division. Now just a point back of the Toronto Argonauts, Ottawa and can claim sole ownership of top spot with a win in Montreal on Thursday … at least temporarily, as the Argos play the winless Tiger-Cats in Monday’s Labour Day Classic. With a little momentum on their side, the REDBLACKS will look to mount their first three-game winning streak of the season against the Alouettes and set the table for an exciting second half to the season.
1,000 x 3 x 2?
REDBLACKS receiver Greg Ellingson needs just 56 yards against Montreal to hit the 1,000-yard mark for the third-straight season. The statistics also suggest that this could be the week the Tampa native reaches the milestone, having recorded at least 56 yards in eight out of 10 games so far this season.
Brad Sinopoli, meanwhile, isn’t far enough reaching the same milestone for the third-straight year himself. The Peterborough product and former University of Ottawa star sits at 728 yards heading into Thursday’s divisional clash.

Jonathan Newsome signed with Ottawa weeks ago but an injury kept him out of the lineup until last weekend, when he made his REDBLACKS debut at defensive end. The addition immediately added a spark, finishing with three defensive tackles.
But his biggest play came late, as the REDBLACKS worked to halt a Lions comeback attempt. After DB Sherrod Baltimore got a hand on a BC pass attempt, Newsome plucked the ball out of the air for his first interception as a REDBLACK. Ottawa will be looking for more big plays out of the 26-year-old on Thursday.
