The Ottawa REDBLACKS were unable to come up with a win on another short week, falling 27-16 to the Montreal Alouettes at TD Place.
An early drive by Montreal was capped off by a David Cote field goal 2:49 in, and they followed it up with quarterback Matt Shiltz rushing for a four-yard touchdown, less than five minutes later.
The Als were threatening on their next possession, but a phenomenal defensive play by Ottawa lineman Kene Onyeka forced a fumble, recovered by Brandin Dandridge. The REDBLACKS would concede a safety, pushing the Montreal lead to 12-0.
A Ward field goal got the REDBLACKS on the board with 3:33 remaining in the first quarter. The Ottawa momentum continued from there, when they drew Montreal offside, and quarterback Caleb Evans threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to Kenny Stafford, bringing the score to 12-10.
Cote kicked another field goal near the six-minute mark of the first quarter, and Shiltz found Jake Wieneke for a 50-yard score with 5:52 remaining in the half, putting Montreal up by 12 once again.
Cote and Ward traded field goals to close out the first half, with the Alouettes leading 25-13.
Ward was again perfect from 43 yards late in the third quarter, making this a nine-point game, but an Ottawa safety about six minutes into the fourth gave the Als a 27-16 lead, and that’s how the score would stay in this one.
