Redblacks Host Thursday Night Matchup With Als

After coming achingly close to their first win of the season just five days ago, the Ottawa REDBLACKS will have a quick turnaround as they look to crack the win column, with the Montreal Alouettes in town.

Caleb Evans connected with Jaelon Acklin for a touchdown, to go with 203 yards through the air, and also rushed for two more in last week’s 25-23 loss to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. The REDBLACKS earned a whopping four turnovers, with Hakeem Bailey recording an interception and a forced fumble in the effort.

Ottawa weren’t the only ones to suffer a gut-punch defeat in Week 6, with the Als dropping a 32-31 decision to the Edmonton Elks, who won in comeback fashion. Former REDBLACKS quarterback Trevor Harris threw for 241 yards, two touchdowns to Eugene Lewis and Tyson Philpot, respectively, and two interceptions, with another former Ottawa pivot – Dominique Davis – rushing in for two more majors.

IN THEIR OWN WORDS

Sherrod Baltimore, defensive back, on powering through Ottawa’s recent struggles: “We stick together. I know if we keep showing up to practice and competing, things will go right. We’ve just got to do a little more. Dig a little deeper.”

Patrick Levels, linebacker, on how the REDBLACKS are approaching a crucial East Division matchup: “We have to find a way to win. It doesn’t have to be pretty, it doesn’t have to be by a large margin. We just need one point more than what the other team has. Going in with anything less than an our-back’s-against-the-wall mentality might not get the job done so we’re going in like this is our first playoff game, and we have to get a win.”

Paul LaPolice, head coach, on the day-to-day approach of the team: “Stay together and go get better. When you’ve strung a couple of losses together, you have to get yourself past the previous and go on to the next. In my experience, to be successful you have to feel pressure internally. If you win four games in a row, you still have to feel pressure to continue to perform at a high level.”
